To Someone I Love

A little inspiration for a meaningful letter

Say what everyday life sometimes leaves unsaid

You might write to a partner, parent, sibling or close friend. Remember a time you laughed together, a moment when they helped you, or a small kindness you have never forgotten. Tell them why it mattered, what you appreciate about them and what you hope you will share in the years to come.

A sentence to get you started

I do not say this often enough, but one thing I love about you is…

How to write your letter

You do not need to be a confident writer. A few honest sentences can be enough. Use these steps as a gentle guide and leave out anything that does not feel right.

  1. Begin with a name and today's date. Use the greeting you would naturally say to this person, or to your future self.
  2. Say why you are writing. Tell them what made you want to keep these words.
  3. Bring one memory to life. Describe a place, a conversation or a small detail that matters to you.
  4. Share what you want them to know. Write about your feelings, gratitude or hopes. Add a little humour if it feels natural.
  5. Finish in your own way. Add a wish, a few loving words or a familiar sign-off, then sign your name.

Questions to help the words flow

Choose two or three. These are starting points, not a checklist.

  • When did you first realise this person mattered to you?
  • Which ordinary moment together would you happily live again?
  • What small kindness have you never properly thanked them for?
  • Which quality do you admire most in them?
  • What would you like to say more often?
  • What experience would you love to share in the future?
  • Which shared joke or harmless habit always makes you smile?

More ways to begin

  • I wanted to write this because everyday life sometimes gets in the way of saying…
  • One small thing you do that means more than you realise is…
  • When you read this, I hope we are still laughing about…

A short example to make your own

Dear you, I often think love lives in the little things: the cup of tea you make without asking, the way you notice when I have had a difficult day, and your heroic confidence that you know a shortcut. Some of my happiest memories are simply of being beside you. Thank you for making ordinary days feel like ours. When you read this, I hope you know how much those moments have meant to me.

If humour is part of your relationship, include a shared joke or a kind observation. Let it sit beside something sincere, so the reader feels appreciated.

Your letter can be short or long. Read it once, add anything you have missed, and let it sound like you.
