A group letter can hold the things everyone talks about today but may forget tomorrow. Remember a funny evening, a holiday, a family tradition or an inside joke, then make a few light-hearted predictions about where everyone will be in five years. How to write your letter
You do not need to be a confident writer. A few honest sentences can be enough. Use these steps as a gentle guide and leave out anything that does not feel right.
- Begin with a name and today's date. Use the greeting you would naturally say to this person, or to your future self.
- Say why you are writing. Tell them what made you want to keep these words.
- Bring one memory to life. Describe a place, a conversation or a small detail that matters to you.
- Share what you want them to know. Write about your feelings, gratitude or hopes. Add a little humour if it feels natural.
- Finish in your own way. Add a wish, a few loving words or a familiar sign-off, then sign your name.
Questions to help the words flow
Choose two or three. These are starting points, not a checklist.
- What brought your group together, and what keeps you close?
- Which gathering, holiday or ordinary evening deserves to be remembered?
- What food, music or tradition always belongs at your get-togethers?
- What does each person contribute that you would miss?
- What has changed this year, and what do you hope stays the same?
- What would you love to celebrate together when these letters return?
- Who will still be saying they are five minutes away when they have not left home?

A short example to make your own
To our future gathering, today the table is crowded, someone has made enough food for twenty and we are still debating who was responsible for the holiday booking. I hope we remember how lucky we are to have these ordinary, noisy evenings together. My prediction is that we will still tell the same stories, with slightly more dramatic details. Wherever life takes us, I hope we keep making room for one another.
Make a small prediction list: the next new hobby, the next holiday destination and who will still be in charge of the playlist. Let everyone choose what to include and whether to read their letter aloud later.
